Partnering for Long-Term Recovery:

The Continuum of Care at Sea

As a clinician, you know that the transition from intensive treatment back to daily life is the highest-risk period for relapse. Sober Sails provides a vital "middle ground"—a 5-day maritime intensive program designed to bridge that gap through experiential therapy, community-building, and accountability.

Preparing for 2027: We begin accepting new referrals in November 2026. Official charters launch with our Florida/Caribbean program January-May 2027, followed by the Apostle Islands program June-September 2027.

Prior to our launch, We welcome any inquiries regarding our recovery model, brochure requests, or to schedule a brief intro to our program for your clinical staff or discharge team. Reach out today to coordinate a presentation.

    • Clinical Leadership & Oversight: Unlike standard adventure travel, our voyages are designed and led by Matt Ellis, LADC. We speak your language and understand the complexities of the recovery arc.

    • Targeted "Middle Ground" Care: We serve as an ideal step-down for clients transitioning from residential treatment or as an intensive "pattern interrupt" for those in outpatient care who need a breakthrough.

    • The "Living Laboratory": The confined, high-consequence environment of a sailing vessel requires immediate application of emotional regulation, sober communication, and radical accountability. It is experiential therapy in its purest form.

    • Durable Peer Connections: Isolation is the enemy of sobriety. By the time your client returns to the dock, they have forged deep, "in-the-trenches" bonds with a crew of sober men, providing a pre-built support network for their return home.

  • The Navigating Recovery curriculum is an experiential model that translates maritime skills into life-long sobriety tools. We focus on three core therapeutic pillars:

    • Pillar 1: Self-Efficacy & Skill Mastery Participants move from "passenger" to "crew." By learning to command a vessel, clients rebuild the self-trust and agency often eroded by addiction. Mastery of a complex environment serves as a powerful metaphor for mastering one's own life.

    • Pillar 2: Somatic Grounding & Mindfulness The sea demands presence. We utilize the natural environment—wind, water, and movement—to teach grounding techniques. This "mindfulness in motion" helps clients regulate their nervous systems and manage triggers without the use of substances.

    • Pillar 3: The Radical Accountability Loop A boat is a closed system where every action affects the collective. We facilitate daily logbook exercises and processing groups where men practice vulnerability, give and receive honest feedback, and take ownership of their role within the crew.

  • The referral process begins with the secure inquiry form on this page. Once submitted, we will reach out to coordinate a clinical screening. We work closely with you to ensure our voyage aligns with the client's existing treatment plan and discharge goals.
